As I lay in bed for the night, thoughts skip through my mind; things I need to do, places I need to go, things I should have done differently, wondering when my sinus’ and sore throat will clear up, memories of past Christmas’, hopes for the future, relationships, the list goes on…but as Christmas approaches those thoughts come to a halt as I’m reminded of the birth of our Savior, Jesus. PEACE. The word peace comes to mind. When I imagine peace, it can be described as sense of calm, pureness, stillness, freedom, silence…it’s, well, peaceful.
Because we live in a fallen world we experience so much pain, anxiety, disaster, turmoil; the consequences of sin. This is why God sent His son, to save us from these consequences, which is death, separation from God, the Father.
I’m brought to experience in my mind what it was like the night Jesus was born. Most know the story of Joseph and the virgin Mary who traveled to Bethlehem, where Mary gives birth to Jesus in a stable, because there was no room at the inn. We read of the Shepard who was met by an angel who shared of the good news. Christmas cards depict the wise men following the North Star, which leads to the place Jesus was born. But the one thing I can’t help but think about it how peaceful that night was. In a world full of chaos, the night Jesus came to earth as the Prince of Peace, the world stood still. It overcame with awesomeness, in the sense of peace.
In your world that is full of chaos, and as your mind sifts through all the thoughts and anxieties, can you allow yourself the stand still, experience His peace? It’s calming, pure, stillness, freedom, silence…it’s peacefulness. Jesus came to bring peace, and peace you can have if you allow yourself to experience the gift of God, through baby Jesus. Close your eyes and bring yourself into the moment when the angels stood in awe and the night sky shined bright as Jesus was born.
We thank you Lord that you came to save us, and that you bring peace, in a world of chaos and sin. In this season we celebrate your birth, the Son of God, Prince of Peace, Savior of the world. May we experience your peace as we reflect on the nights before Christmas, in your precious Holy name, Jesus, Amen.
